Reptile Q&A

Q&A: What is the cheapest Reptile Pet to care for?

Question by Major Panda: What is the cheapest Reptile Pet to care for?
I am really interested in having a reptile pet, maybe lizard or snake. I am 18 and I am the youngest sibling. I have a part time job. But I am looking for a great beginner affordable reptile as pet.

Anyone know the approximate cost? Lets say I get the reptile for free, and just have to buy the supplies + yearly supplies. How much would I spend a year with a reptile.

Thanks in advance.

Best answer:

Answer by kouneli
Anoles I would think. They require a 10 gallon tank with screen lid, and eat mainly crickets. The set up would be approximately $ 80-120 for the initial cost. After that, all you need for monthly supplies would be substrate and crickets….bulbs if they burn out, as well.

Do reptiles carry a bacteria that is dangerous to infants?

Question by ennazus: Do reptiles carry a bacteria that is dangerous to infants?
I have heard that some reptiles carry a recessive strain of sceptacemia which isnt harmful to most people but c an be dangerous for young babies or those with immune deficiencies. I am considering getting an iguana but im a childminder and i dont want to endanger any of the young children i care for. Would simply not allowing them to handle the iguana and washing my own hands after touching it be enough to ensure this or is there a greater risk that i am unaware of? Thanks

Best answer:

Answer by cs
Septecemia simply means an infection of the blood. It is not caused by genetics, but by bacteria, fungus or parasites
Reptiles (all) carry many types of pathogens (salmonella, etc) that can be dangerous to any person, but more so the young, old and immune compromised. I certianly would not let any of the children handle them, and I would strongly suggest you reconsider getting one. If one of the kids gets sick, not only would you be feeling guilty, but I’d be worried that you could get sued.

Proper handwashing and cage care is needed for owning a reptile no matter who is handling it.

What should I do to teach reptiles in elementary school?

Question by Ayme: What should I do to teach reptiles in elementary school?
I’m planning a 50 minute lesson/lab/activity to teach anything about reptiles to any primary grade. The important part is that the learning is based on standards, so no “coloring the crocodile” activities. Any ideas? Or lesson plan websites for science?

I’ve had the idea of getting a reptile,
and I recently found a 5 gallon tank.
I was wondering what reptiles are good for beginners that can be maintained and happy in a 5 gallon tank.

Best answer:

Answer by farzkitty
hmm…5 gallons is small for a reptile. the normal size is at least 20 gallons. maybe a small lizard. i have a 5 gallon tank and i settled for a newt (i know, not a reptile, but at least it’s not a fish).

Q&A: What are the main differences between early reptiles / amphibians and dinosaurs?

Question by : What are the main differences between early reptiles / amphibians and dinosaurs?
Could it be argued that reptiles and birds are simply the products of dinosaurs that did not die out? What physical characteristics separate dinosaurs from reptiles? (other than extinction).

Couldn’t crocodiles & alligators be considered dinosaurs, seeing how they were contemporaries with the dinosaurs that died out?

Sorry if the question is ridiculous- Just it seems to me early reptiles and amphibians existed at the time of the dinosaurs- so how do dinosaurs differ from early reptiles and amphibians?

Are birds the only surviving descendant of dinosaurs?

Best answer:

Answer by Rockit Bug
First of all, early Reptiles evolved from Amphibians over 300 million years ago, and are distinguished from the Amphibians by their ability to lay watertight eggs called amniotic eggs, and their possession of watertight skin that allows them to live a more land-based life than Amphibians. The most well-known Reptiles, with the exception of Turtles, are classified in a group called the Diapsids, which are characterized by generally having a pair of holes called temporal fenestrae behind each eye socket. This is opposed to the more “primitive” group of Reptiles called the Anapsids, which do not have those holes behind the eye sockets. Turtles are thought to be the only surviving Anapsids.

Dinosaurs are classified in a group of Diapsids called the Archosaurs, which can mainly be distinguished by another hole between each eye socket and nostril called the antorbital fenestra. Crocodilians, Pterodactyls, Dinosaurs, and Birds all descended from the Archosaur group, although the temporal fenestrae were lost during the evolution of the living examples. Lizards and Snakes belong to a separate Diapsid group called the Lepidosaurs, which could be thought of as just being cousins of the Archosaurs.

The Archosaurs began to rise to dominance about 250 million years ago at the beginning of the Triassic period and are further divided into two other groups called the Crurotarsans and the Avemetatarsalians. These two groups are distinguished from each other by the structure of their ankle joints. The Crurotarsans had a more complex ankle joint that allowed more rotation of the foot, while the Avemetatarsalians have a more simple, hinge-like ankle structure that does not allow much rotation. The Dinosaurs were Avemetatarsalians. Pterodactyls were also Avemetatarsalians, but they were not actually Dinosaurs, they were really just close cousins.

The Crurotarsans became largely dominant on the supercontinent of Pangaea during the later part of the Triassic period and evolved into a variety of shapes and sizes, but they all went extinct at the end of the Triassic, with the exception of the surprisingly small ancestors of the Crocodilians. The Dinosaurs evolved from earlier forms of Avemetatarsalians over 230 million years ago, and as an animal group, they had physical traits that separated them from other Reptiles, and such physical distinctions are called “synapomorphies”.

From Wikipedia, “Dinosaur synapomorphies include an elongated crest on the humerus, or upper arm bone, to accommodate the attachment of deltopectoral muscles; a shelf at the rear of the ilium, or main hip bone; a tibia, or shin bone, featuring a broad lower edge and a flange pointing out and to the rear; and an ascending projection on the astragalus, one of the ankle bones, which secures it to the tibia.”

The Dinosaurs also stood with their legs underneath their bodies in a manner similar to the way that most modern Mammals do it, while all living reptiles that have them usually have their legs sticking out from the sides of their body. Dinosaurs were land animals, and so the Sea Monsters belonged to Reptile groups other than Dinosaurs.

Birds are thought by many scientists to have evolved from the Dinosaurs due to the similarities that they have found between Birds and a group of Dinosaurs called the Theropods, which were two-legged Dinosaurs and largely included meat-eaters like Tyrannosaurus rex and Velociraptor. There aren’t any other animals that could have possibly evolved from the Dinosaurs.

Any tips on controlling live crickets as feed for reptiles ?

Question by Lisa T: Any tips on controlling live crickets as feed for reptiles ?
The little critters just escape when I open their container to give them gut loading food and even more so when I try and transfer a few of them to a little container to dust them with calcium prior to feeding to our leopard gecko. Any of you experienced reptile keepers out there have any helpful advice, please ?

Best answer:

Answer by Samanamantha
I purchase crickets and transport them in a plastic bag, yours is probobly the same manner. I simply open the bag, it is large enough that they cannot jump out, and quickly pour in the vitamins and calcium-both in powder form. I shake the bag a little bit to coat all the crickets. If you must gut load, purchase a small tank or other enclosure that could actually contain the crickets. You must dump them in the enclosure quickly and seal it. Some are bound to escape anyway.Use a net, like a goldfish net, to scoop some up and place c=something over it, like a piece of cardboard, to prevent them from jumping out of the net. I hope this helps.

What types of reptiles can be housed in a 55 gallon tank?

Question by : What types of reptiles can be housed in a 55 gallon tank?
I am going to buy a 55 gallon tank and all of the equipment needed. I was wondering what type of reptiles can be housed in a 55 gallon tank?

Best answer:

Answer by Ashley
You can get a turtle, fish
Gecko, lizard, snake, rats(i know, not a reptile), bearded dragon

Just make sure you do the proper research. In general, aquatic animals like turtles are much more work. Their tanks have to be cleaned at least weekly and they are fed every day. Reptiles are much more low maintenance but can be less fun to watch.

I love that series.

I don’t understand your question but I think I can help.

Well in the reptile room

-Uncle Montgomery (Monty) dies/ Gets Murdered.
-Count Olaf disguises himself as Uncle Montgomery’s Asisitant (Stephano).
- Count Olaf and on of his accociates (Hooky) murder Uncle Monty using poision extract that was saved in a bottle.
-The Baudelaire orphans are sent somewhere else.
-The Baudelaire Children suffer a lot from Uncle Monty’s death.
-Hooky disguises himself as Dr.Lucafont and helps Count Olaf try to get the Baudelaire fortune
-The Baudelaire Children try to atch count Olaf and Hooky but they couldn’t
-Count Olaf murdered Uncle Monty’s old asistant so he hould disguise himself as Stephano to get the Baudelaires in his clutches.
-The Baudelaires prove the Stephona is count olaf by revealing his tatoo of an eye on his ankle with a piece of cloth since the tatoo was covered with make-up.
- Violet invents a lockpick to open count Olaf’s (Stephano’s) Briefcase to look for any evidence he is Count Olaf and if he murdered Uncle Monty.

This is all I could think of. I’ll add more later.

Hope This Helps with your report

Question by Helen♥: What are all the different types of reptiles you can keep as a pet?
I posted a question like this before saying instead of reptiles farm animals. But i’ve decided I want a reptile instead. So I found out you can keep alligators and crocodiles, chameleons, iguanas, other reptiles(frogs, crabs), snakes, spiders and turtles. Are there any other kinds of reptiles I can keep?

Best answer:

Answer by Cynthia
#1 there is no such thing as a chemeleons…it’s chelonians
#2 FROGS ARE NOT reptiles…they are amphibians!!
#3 turtles are cheloians
#4 spiders are not reptiles!
good reptile pets would be snakes…cuz they are easy to mantain and to clean and they only need to b fed once a week.
Also geckos are good pets…reptiles are basically ideal pets…if u can handle feeding a snake live mice. I would not recommend crocs, or alligators.

Question by az_matic8490: What are some beginger tips in owning a Leopard Gecko?
Hi. I want to get a Leopard Gecko for a pet. I read a buch of Care Sheets for them but does anyone have some personal tips with them? I own a 10gal Aquarium tank. I have read that it is big enough. Is it or do I need to get a 20 gal? Also, what are some general items I need for the tank for the Gecko besides a heating pad, places to hide, bedding, and a water dish? Do they like to be in fake plants too? Also do I need a water dripper for the water bowl? Or will it reconize standing water? If you have any other tips/hints, please post them too. I have never owned a reptile first and I would like the first one to be a good experiance. Thanks!
