Can I use pond water to help start my aquarium?

Question by Raegan T: Can I use pond water to help start my aquarium?
I have over 400 gallons in aquariums and I just got a 100 gallon. I was wondering if I could use my goldfish/koi pond water to help get it t started? The pond is 1500 gallons, so if I filled it up the pond wouldn’t miss it. The pond doesn’t have any problems with algae, the fish are in perfect health and the pond is self-sustaining. I only have a small fountain in the middle to help oxygenate the water.
I have already set up quite a few aquariums successfully. I don’t need anymore education on that.

The water in my pond is balanced. The ammonia, nitrates, ph level ETC are all where they should be. I won’t use spring water, either. It’s no better than tap.
Yes, setting up an aquarium successfully is a good feeling, but I have done so for 5 20 gallons, 2 50 gallons, 2 75 gallons, and 5 10 gallons. After awhile it loses it’s touch.

Yes, I am going it put goldfish in it. I don’t have any in the house yet and I would love to.

How do I start an outdoor fish pond?

727751 0a13a0d493 m How do I start an outdoor fish pond?
by lotusgreen

Question by Nessus: How do I start an outdoor fish pond?
We recently bought a house with a small outdoor concrete pond. We were told by the previous owners at closing that they used to keep fish in the pond.
It looks like it holds around 60 – 80 gallons of water. There is a drain hole right in the center, but there is no pump or filter. It hasn’t held fish for a some time since the sellers had rented the house for a few years before selling.
What do we need to do to turn this into a fish pond? I’m willing to tackle almost any DIY project, but I would prefer not to have to dig up my yard if it can be avoided.

Best answer:

Answer by ZolTar
Best thing to do is clean it up. Use a mildew killer on the concrete. Purchase a pump and filter at Walmart for like $ 60, buy some fish acessories, maybe some pond stones to place in the bottom, purchase some fish, fill the pond with water and put everything in. You might also need to get an extension cord depending on how far away the outlet is. To hide the cord just dig a 3 inch hole however long you need it and put it in there and then cover it back up. Best thing to use is a trowel. This why when you mow you don’t cut into the cord.

2695152131 5c2ffa72da m Q&A: Can an experienced fisher give me some tips for pond fishing in Missouri?
by д§mд

Question by lil’ toke: Can an experienced fisher give me some tips for pond fishing in Missouri?
I am not a good fisher, I have only gone about 4 times and I never remember catching many fish. I am going pond fishing tomorrow and I just wanted some good tips that will help me get more fish. I don’t plan on doing anything advanced and I don’t plan on being in a boat. I just wanted information like different techniques for different fish, how to unhook certain fish, ect.

Best answer:

Answer by Josh
If you want an easy day of fishing, I’d suggest buying and using rooster tails/inline spinners. They’ll catch about anything that happens to be in the pond. As far as fishing them, you can simply cast them out and reel them in at a steady speed. Very simple.

Find cover in the water, like stumps, rocks, stick-ups, and anything else. Fish these areas thoroughly; they should all be holding fish.

Be smart, and bring a pair of needle nose pliers with you for getting the lures out of the fish’s mouth. While most of the time you can get the hooks out without them, there are going to be times when the hook gets in an awkward position, which can make them very difficult to get out. The quicker you can get the fish back into the water, the better. To get a little more technical, you need to push back on the hook through where it entered. Don’t be yanking on it or anything.

i was thinking about remaking it agian and i was wondering how large some redtailed cats would get if i just put a few in it and thats all
i love in the florida the temp gets to about 50 in the winter 90 in the summer

Best answer:

Answer by Guppy Geek
You can’t keep RTCs in your pond – seriously, stop asking questions about them, you obviously don’t have a CLUE how to care for them.

Find another more appropriate fish to keep. You don’t have the funds (obviously) and definitely don’t have the experience and know-how to care for fish like red-tailed cats.

Do the fish and yourself a favor and SKIP the RTCs.

Question by Jamminout: Does anyone have any ideas about how to close my Koi Fish Pond?
I live in Oklahoma and can no longer afford to keep my fish. (water, electric, feed etc.) I have called everyone I thought might be interested all ready with no luck. They live in a 13′x13′x51/2′ outdoor pond. I would sell all 12 Koi and 10 Fancy Goldfish…6″-22″
cheep!! Plus the Biofilter, pre-filter, pumps, nets, treatments for the water, water testing kits, catch tub and the 2 year old 45ml 20×20 liner. All you need is to dig the hole!!!
Otherwise I guess I …?

Have photos if interested. e-me at :amie_moore@sbcglobal,net

Answer by Ann
Hi–Wish I could be closer!
I hate to hear that you cannot keep it–they really do not cost alot to operate once all the work is done with digging, buying and fixing, etc has been done!
Is there a local aquarium, or Zoo or Science Center in your area where you could donate your fish to—(get a tax receipt)
Or.. try a chinese restaraunt—they may be willing to buy them for their ponds that some have inside–for display.
Advertise it in your local paper—or at a garden shop!
Good luck–Sure wish I lived close–I’d be there!

by patersor

Question by luckyladyd: I have a pond in my back yard and it is full of crayfish(crawdads) Does anyone know how to get rid of them?
Well, my pond is full of these things, and the pond is full of holes, some wholes are as big as your fist! My pond will leak down pretty quickly. I have tried Bentinite(lots of it) and the pond still leaks. I really think if the crawdad or crayfish were not in our pond then the pond it would hold water. And maybe then the bentinite would fix the holes. But these things were still there after we put about 400 lbs of bentinite in the pond, Now the pond is about 1/4 of a acer and so that is not really big-So could someone please help?? Because right now it has some water but as the weather heats up i assume it will go dry. It went dry last year. The only thing the pond is good for at this moment is for the grandbabys to catch lobsters!!! (LOL) So please, does anyone have any idea on what i should do?

Best answer:

Answer by Waynette S
I live in East Texas and we have crawfish at the bottom of my hill. It is not legal, but I live in the country and no one has checked on this yet. I put a moth ball down each hole and close it up with my foot. This kills the crawfish, and if there are a lot of them, there may be an odor after they die. Good luck.

I have a 2 inch largemouth bass in a 240 gallon. I could barly afford a large enough habitat for him, so I dont want to be shelling out $ 200 a year to be feeding him all feeders. I dont want to breed livebearers for food for him. Could I slowly ween him off feeders until he only eats maybe one a day, a worm a day, and the rest pellet food. Would this be ok? Could I even do it?

How do you go about building a koi fish pond?

Question by Jason: How do you go about building a koi fish pond?
A koi fish pond, a water garden, something like that
How much would it cost if you have someone do it or do it yourself
How much space is needed
And just in general where do you start

Best answer:

Answer by Jrbott
Ask anyone who has built a pond and the first thing they say is it’s too small so build big. Deep water for koi. You first lay out where you want the water, then dig the hole. Take into consideration that you may want to put some potted plants down in the water around the edges so make a ledge for them. Next you cover the hole over with a pad that will keep the roots/rocks from punching holes in the liner. Add the liner, then edge everything with stones to hold the liner down. Don’t get carried away cutting the liner until you have the stones in place. Measure twice, cut once….. You will need a filter system and pump which can be placed in the deep end of the pond. Talk over with an electrician where/how to run power for everything. To get a feel for the cost, check out liner/filter/pump etc prices and what your time is worth.

Q&A: How do I stop pond fish getting sunburn?

4786509250 2dd3e4b948 m Q&A: How do I stop pond fish getting sunburn?
by TinkerThom

Question by Nighthawk: How do I stop pond fish getting sunburn?
I have a grass carp (about 20 inches long) in an outside pond. Every summer he/she likes to bask in the sun with the top of his head out of the water. This area of his skin, which is normally black, quickly goes white and pink and looks very unhealthy. I fear he will get skin cancer as each year it is worse, and this year it has started early. So far, it all heals up over winter.

Every time he is disturbed he gets back in the sun after a few seconds. He shares the pond with numerous gold fish and they don’t have the same problem.

I don’t think sun cream or wearing a hat are viable options, and I don’t want to shade the whole pond.

Location SW England about 50 degrees North.
Thanks for suggestions so far. You are quite right about pond weed, lilly pads etc and I have lots of these, but this fish seeks out the gaps! I might just add that this fish has full control of its swim bladder and makes a conscious choice to break the surface.

Answer by knightrunner13
Not realy a problem you can solve it likes the sun and unless you cover all of the pond it will keep sunning it self .

How can pond liner be attached to a concrete sidewalk and house foundation?

Question by Inquisitive One: How can pond liner be attached to a concrete sidewalk and house foundation?
I have a nice curved sidewalk on one side and the house on the other. I would like to attach the pond liner in some way so it looks like the side of the pond is the sidewalk. Any tips would be appreciated.

Best answer:

Answer by sciencegravy
I’m assuming this is NOT a public sidewalk – a pond right up to it would be a liability for children walking by – but a smaller walkway on your property.

If so, simply dig your pond in that spot, and dig and shape the wall very close to the sidewalk.
