How do I get rid of bees around my pond?

Question by MsBrasell: How do I get rid of bees around my pond?
I have a 500 gallon pond with koi fish. Bees have discovered it as a water source and have become a problem.

I am not afraid of bees, I know that if you don’t bother them, they won’t bother you.

My pond is only 5 feet across so I can’t just let them have their space. There are 10 bees there at any given time.

It’s gotten to the point that I can’t get close to the pond during the day without stirring them up. I have to do everything at night with lights on which is a pain.

The bees are coming for the water, the hive is not on my property and I know what direction they are flying to but not where they are going.

Will anything deter them? I can’t spray anything because of the pond plants and fish.

I’ve resorted to catching them with a net and stepping on them but I don’t really want to kill them, I just want them to go somewhere else.

I know they won’t bother me if they aren’t provoked but it is hard to watch my koi fish eat with 10-15 bees buzzing around my head!

Is freeing turtles from an asian food market into a pond a bad idea?

Question by : Is freeing turtles from an asian food market into a pond a bad idea?
I am planning on buying a few turtles from this local asian market that sells live turtles and releasing them on the large pond on my property. Is there anything I should know before I do this?
I believe turtles carry salmonella whether they are bought from a pet store or in the wild, and I would of course be very careful with them so it shouldn’t be a worry
I am not rescuing them, i’m sorry if it sounded like that. I have a very large pond and I assumed that they would survive well there because there are frogs and such. I realize they are there to be sold for food but I thought populating my pond would be cheaper from a food store than a pet store.

Best answer:

Answer by Lung
Yes, they carry listeria, ecoli and other really dangerous and nasty bacteria. My nephew saved some turtles that way from a restaurant his dad took him too. He got salmonella from them very nasty.

Any ideas for a Koi Fish Pond Re-opening celebration?

2586024769 df5a095caa m Any ideas for a Koi Fish Pond Re opening celebration?
by dalechumbley

Question by myotheremail108: Any ideas for a Koi Fish Pond Re-opening celebration?
I’m re-posting this question to try and get more responses! Thanks for your help!
———————–

At my job, we are having a re-opening of a newly created Koi Fish pond. We are planning to have a “Feed the Fish” type day with the kids in the area – and were wondering if anyone has ideas for this event?
We already have fish-type giveaways, and will be letting each child help feed the fish – but…how else could we implement the idea of Koi fish in the celebration?
(There will be kids of all ages there)

Thanks!

You could have a clown make baloon fish. See photo in link below. I would ask them to us red or gold baloons to look more like Koi.

An idea would be to have a drawing for people to put the fish in the pond. It could just be a symbolic pouring a bucket of pond water with a fish in it, into the pond.

Have a Koi in a fish bowl and have a photographer take portraits of people with the fish. Print and sell them at the event.

How do I clean a pond and build a waterfall?

Question by Jennifer D: How do I clean a pond and build a waterfall?
We have just purchased a country home, a fixer upper, and I am looking for knowlege about some upcoming projects. My first is I have a ton of really high weeds to take down, our typical weed eater isn’t strong enough. Any ideas? Also, we have a pond, a real pond, not man-made, that deperately needs cleaned. It has a ton of “slime” (I’m told it’s pollen) on top of the water. There is no filter or aeration system.Where do I begin? And what is the most inexpensive way to do this? I
am not afraid of hard work. I just don’t know what I am doing. I am also looking for a baby nubian female goat, just for a pet. Is there also anywhere out there to look for farm animals that need a home?

Can I use pond water to help start my aquarium?

Question by Raegan T: Can I use pond water to help start my aquarium?
I have over 400 gallons in aquariums and I just got a 100 gallon. I was wondering if I could use my goldfish/koi pond water to help get it t started? The pond is 1500 gallons, so if I filled it up the pond wouldn’t miss it. The pond doesn’t have any problems with algae, the fish are in perfect health and the pond is self-sustaining. I only have a small fountain in the middle to help oxygenate the water.
I have already set up quite a few aquariums successfully. I don’t need anymore education on that.

The water in my pond is balanced. The ammonia, nitrates, ph level ETC are all where they should be. I won’t use spring water, either. It’s no better than tap.
Yes, setting up an aquarium successfully is a good feeling, but I have done so for 5 20 gallons, 2 50 gallons, 2 75 gallons, and 5 10 gallons. After awhile it loses it’s touch.

Yes, I am going it put goldfish in it. I don’t have any in the house yet and I would love to.

How do I start an outdoor fish pond?

727751 0a13a0d493 m How do I start an outdoor fish pond?
by lotusgreen

Question by Nessus: How do I start an outdoor fish pond?
We recently bought a house with a small outdoor concrete pond. We were told by the previous owners at closing that they used to keep fish in the pond.
It looks like it holds around 60 – 80 gallons of water. There is a drain hole right in the center, but there is no pump or filter. It hasn’t held fish for a some time since the sellers had rented the house for a few years before selling.
What do we need to do to turn this into a fish pond? I’m willing to tackle almost any DIY project, but I would prefer not to have to dig up my yard if it can be avoided.

Best answer:

Answer by ZolTar
Best thing to do is clean it up. Use a mildew killer on the concrete. Purchase a pump and filter at Walmart for like $ 60, buy some fish acessories, maybe some pond stones to place in the bottom, purchase some fish, fill the pond with water and put everything in. You might also need to get an extension cord depending on how far away the outlet is. To hide the cord just dig a 3 inch hole however long you need it and put it in there and then cover it back up. Best thing to use is a trowel. This why when you mow you don’t cut into the cord.

Q&A: Can an experienced fisher give me some tips for pond fishing in Missouri?

2695152131 5c2ffa72da m Q&A: Can an experienced fisher give me some tips for pond fishing in Missouri?
by д§mд

Question by lil’ toke: Can an experienced fisher give me some tips for pond fishing in Missouri?
I am not a good fisher, I have only gone about 4 times and I never remember catching many fish. I am going pond fishing tomorrow and I just wanted some good tips that will help me get more fish. I don’t plan on doing anything advanced and I don’t plan on being in a boat. I just wanted information like different techniques for different fish, how to unhook certain fish, ect.

Best answer:

Answer by Josh
If you want an easy day of fishing, I’d suggest buying and using rooster tails/inline spinners. They’ll catch about anything that happens to be in the pond. As far as fishing them, you can simply cast them out and reel them in at a steady speed. Very simple.

Find cover in the water, like stumps, rocks, stick-ups, and anything else. Fish these areas thoroughly; they should all be holding fish.

Be smart, and bring a pair of needle nose pliers with you for getting the lures out of the fish’s mouth. While most of the time you can get the hooks out without them, there are going to be times when the hook gets in an awkward position, which can make them very difficult to get out. The quicker you can get the fish back into the water, the better. To get a little more technical, you need to push back on the hook through where it entered. Don’t be yanking on it or anything.

i was thinking about remaking it agian and i was wondering how large some redtailed cats would get if i just put a few in it and thats all
i love in the florida the temp gets to about 50 in the winter 90 in the summer

Best answer:

Answer by Guppy Geek
You can’t keep RTCs in your pond – seriously, stop asking questions about them, you obviously don’t have a CLUE how to care for them.

Find another more appropriate fish to keep. You don’t have the funds (obviously) and definitely don’t have the experience and know-how to care for fish like red-tailed cats.

Do the fish and yourself a favor and SKIP the RTCs.

Question by Jamminout: Does anyone have any ideas about how to close my Koi Fish Pond?
I live in Oklahoma and can no longer afford to keep my fish. (water, electric, feed etc.) I have called everyone I thought might be interested all ready with no luck. They live in a 13′x13′x51/2′ outdoor pond. I would sell all 12 Koi and 10 Fancy Goldfish…6″-22″
cheep!! Plus the Biofilter, pre-filter, pumps, nets, treatments for the water, water testing kits, catch tub and the 2 year old 45ml 20×20 liner. All you need is to dig the hole!!!
Otherwise I guess I …?

Have photos if interested. e-me at :amie_moore@sbcglobal,net

Hi–Wish I could be closer!
I hate to hear that you cannot keep it–they really do not cost alot to operate once all the work is done with digging, buying and fixing, etc has been done!
Is there a local aquarium, or Zoo or Science Center in your area where you could donate your fish to—(get a tax receipt)
Or.. try a chinese restaraunt—they may be willing to buy them for their ponds that some have inside–for display.
Advertise it in your local paper—or at a garden shop!
Good luck–Sure wish I lived close–I’d be there!

Question by luckyladyd: I have a pond in my back yard and it is full of crayfish(crawdads) Does anyone know how to get rid of them?
Well, my pond is full of these things, and the pond is full of holes, some wholes are as big as your fist! My pond will leak down pretty quickly. I have tried Bentinite(lots of it) and the pond still leaks. I really think if the crawdad or crayfish were not in our pond then the pond it would hold water. And maybe then the bentinite would fix the holes. But these things were still there after we put about 400 lbs of bentinite in the pond, Now the pond is about 1/4 of a acer and so that is not really big-So could someone please help?? Because right now it has some water but as the weather heats up i assume it will go dry. It went dry last year. The only thing the pond is good for at this moment is for the grandbabys to catch lobsters!!! (LOL) So please, does anyone have any idea on what i should do?

Best answer:

Answer by Waynette S
I live in East Texas and we have crawfish at the bottom of my hill. It is not legal, but I live in the country and no one has checked on this yet. I put a moth ball down each hole and close it up with my foot. This kills the crawfish, and if there are a lot of them, there may be an odor after they die. Good luck.
