UV or ultra violet sterilization is not anything new and has been around for decades. Anywhere where there is a large body of water such as a swimming pool,  an outdoor pond, or even a water purification center,  often employs the use of a UV sterilizer to clean the water. Unlike a UV clarifier, which collects the algae and deposits it into the filter system for conversion into clean water, the UV sterilizer kills 99% of the aquarium algae and harmful substances within the confines of the sterilizer unit. It does this by slowly pumping the water through the unit which is then subjected to very strong ultra violet radiation by means of a series of low pressure mercury lamps. These lamps will in turn destroy the DNA of the algae or harmful bacteria/pathogens rendering them useless.

We have talked about larger bodies of water such as swimming pools, ponds and water treatment centers employing UV technology. However do you really need one for your aquarium? The bottom line to this debate is that is simply up to you! By this I mean that it is not a necessity to use an UV sterilizer in your tank, as the filtration processes are generally sufficient enough by means of a mechanical filtration system. Also, there are other methods that can use to kill aquarium algae. The purists among you will argue that you can never have enough filtration. In this case, if you are insistent on purchasing a UV unit for your tank, then it needs to be placed last in the filtration line. eg, after the mechanical filtration system. It is important to shop around as there are a lot of aquarium UV sterilization units to choose from, and yes, size really does matter!
