How do I keep large black birds away from my bird feeders?
Question by Lynng_countrygirl: How do I keep large black birds away from my bird feeders?
I have bird feeders in my yard to feed the tiny little birds that fly about, especially this time of year when it’s really cold. The problem I am having is that there are alot of crow / black birds in our area and they are absolutely relentless when it comes to the bird feeders. I really don’t care for these black birds at all. They eat or destroy all the food for the little birds in a short amount of time. Does any one have a sensible solution to this bird problem, besides shooting the black birds. We have plenty of woods and fields for these black birds to hang out in….Not my bird feeders!
Best answer:
Answer by Eurydice
you should feed thru a bird feeder with a small hole that only the small birds can fit thru

No you can’t. They don’t like to be handled and they can’t be kept alone. Get a pair or don’t get them at all. They are really fragile and if you grab it and try to hold it, their bones may break.

Any tips for Bird of Paradise?
Question by Sarah: Any tips for Bird of Paradise?
I got a small one from a friend and planted it — a couple of months later, it is still alive but that’s about all that can be said for it! It has no new growth and doesn’t look healthy. I added some bone meal to the soil and it gets water based fertilizer regularly. We’ve had plenty of rain. It gets part sun, part shade. I live in Central Florida. How can I encourage it to grow and, even, perhaps, flower?
Best answer:
Answer by fair2midlynn
The success or failure of a planting often depends on whether the plants receive adequate moisture. Liberal watering during the growing season will encourage plants to grow more profusely and ensure a large crop of flowers during the blooming season.
To aid in proper watering, construct a saucer-like basin around the plant from the extra backfill soil. This will hold water until it drains down to the plant’s roots. Both a soggy soil with poor drainage and insufficient watering will cause leaves to yellow and eventually die. During the winter months, plants should be watered only when the soil next to the plants is fairly dry.
Mulch placed around the base of the plants will help conserve moisture, stabilize root temperature, and reduce weed infestations. Keep a 2- to 3-inch circular area around the stem of plants free of mulch. Mulches against the stems of plants may increase the chance of stem rot.
Common organic mulch materials include leaves, pine needles, bark, wood chips, sawdust and bagasse (a sugar cane by-product). Inorganic materials like glass wool, gravel and crushed stone also are suitable. Peat should not be used because once dry it is very difficult to wet and may restrict water movement into the soil.
Fertilization For best growth and flowering, bird-of-paradise requires fertilization. Slow-release fertilizers, such as sewage sludge and bloodmeal, or an inorganic complete fertilizer such as 12-4-8, can be used. Apply slow-release fertilizers at a rate of three to five pounds per 100 square feet of bed area and 12-4-8 at the rate of one pound per 100 square feet of bed area. Spread fertilizer around plants every three months during the growing season. Addition of minor elements is recommended.
At least once a year, preferably during summer, remove dead leaves and old flower stalks to prevent fungal organisms from building up on dead tissue.

Can you give me some tips on overgrown bird beaks?
Question by astoriasholes: Can you give me some tips on overgrown bird beaks?
I was over at my aunts house, givving the cockatiel a trip for the nails and wings, givving it a ath in the sink ECT…So I got my glvoe(To hold the bird upsidown to clip its nails)and he bit me so hard, the very ede of his beak came off.He was bleeding, but we ahd quick bleeding stop ready.I did treat the bird, and he seems better now, but what should we do with him?
Well…..Thanks guys, but at first he was upsidown(as far as I’ve read that is a pos where the premidot could easily kill them so they don’t like to be ion there backs)and he bit down on the glove so hard, that the overgrown part(The underneath of his beak)just broke off and landed on the ground, with a dot of blood on the glove. So we did the treament, and we also gave him another bath to clean his beak off. So when we put him back in his cage, he bit me again, and the ovegrown outside of his beak just fell off, but no bleeding that time.
I have been to the vet only once, but I have been treating my birds and everyobdyesles birds too, along with some of the wild birds.
If you can guese my age, I’m not even a teenager yet. Also, don’t ever trust the petstore people, and buy from private breeders!
Sam is doing fine right now! The bottom of his beat is fine! I gave my aunt some of that Zupeime bird pellets and his feathers are getting brighter! And he was hardly singer, but now he sings even before his cover gose off his cage!

The way I learned this is a book called “The Click That Does The Trick” I bought it on amazon.com. It has SO many tricks! Easy, intermediate, and advanced. I say its a great book.

Q&A: I’m trying to get a cockatiel or conure but my dad won’t agree to having the bird, any tips? besides (nagging)
Question by Ferretsrocksocks: I’m trying to get a cockatiel or conure but my dad won’t agree to having the bird, any tips? besides (nagging)
ya my dad wont let me get a bird even with months of research and my good budget for supporting a bird. plus since i will be in my basement playing video games, i can be with the bird(for those birds who need lots of attention) so to sum it up i have optimum conditions for getting a bird. All is left is the go-ahead from the almighty parents.
Best answer:
Answer by Shortie
If your dad says no, then leave it alone for a while. Have you asked him why you cannot have a bird? What does he say? If you leave it alone for a while, it will show respect towards your dad. Next time the subject comes up don’t argue just respect what he says and go on. The more respectful you are, and the less nagging you are the better. Maybe there is a compromise somewhere? How old are you?

Question by `~Alice in Wonderland~`: Bird tricks??
How do i make my cockatiel talk… if cockatiels even do talk
.
And also, how do i get my cockatiel to sing some songs??? I want him to sing the entertainer :3
Best answer:
Answer by wrey1
Some cockatiels do talk but mostly the males. You can take it to a bird store (where they groom and clip the wings) and they will be able to tell you if it is male or female.
Not all male cockatiels will talk just like any other parrot talking, some just do and some just don’t.
All you can do is work with it and repeat things over and over and play the song you want it to sing over and over, either it will do it or it won’t. Either way it will love the attention and you will be making a good bond with your bird.
Good Luck
