My husband are interested in adding a bird to our family and we were wondering what spieces would be good for someone who has little experience with birds. We would like a bird we can handle safely. Also what would be a good source for learning more about pet bird species?

Budgies are a good species to start with. They’re small, inexpensive, and friendly if you raise them right. Just do research online, in the library, ect. You could even go to the pet store and ask some people there.

What is the best bird to get a pet for a child?
Question by army_sister785: What is the best bird to get a pet for a child?
My niece is 6 and wants a bird. I was wanting any suggestions about what is the best bird to get as a first pet bird. I was thinking about a parakeet because I had them when I was younger and enjoyed them. This bird(s) will be kept at her grandparents so she can enjoy it on her weekend visits. Is it better to get 2 birds so they can keep each other company or will 1 be ok by itself?
First off, she is MY niece, not my child!
And yes, I have asked her grandparents about it! And there IS a reason why she can’t take it home, her mother would feed it to the cats or let it go, that’s how smart and caring she is.
She had a baby bird and it died and she doesn’t know it yet and she’ll be crushed when she comes back in a few days to an empty cage. So I’m getting her a bird for her birthday if she wants another one.
I know she probably won’t be handling the birds, we were never able to handle ours much. They’ll mostly be for her to watch and take care of.

Answer by devon d
I would suggest, since she is 6 and all…only get one. and yes, a parakeet is ideal for a first-time bird owner.

How do I keep large black birds away from my bird feeders?
Question by Lynng_countrygirl: How do I keep large black birds away from my bird feeders?
I have bird feeders in my yard to feed the tiny little birds that fly about, especially this time of year when it’s really cold. The problem I am having is that there are alot of crow / black birds in our area and they are absolutely relentless when it comes to the bird feeders. I really don’t care for these black birds at all. They eat or destroy all the food for the little birds in a short amount of time. Does any one have a sensible solution to this bird problem, besides shooting the black birds. We have plenty of woods and fields for these black birds to hang out in….Not my bird feeders!
Best answer:
Answer by Eurydice
you should feed thru a bird feeder with a small hole that only the small birds can fit thru

No you can’t. They don’t like to be handled and they can’t be kept alone. Get a pair or don’t get them at all. They are really fragile and if you grab it and try to hold it, their bones may break.

Any tips for Bird of Paradise?
Question by Sarah: Any tips for Bird of Paradise?
I got a small one from a friend and planted it — a couple of months later, it is still alive but that’s about all that can be said for it! It has no new growth and doesn’t look healthy. I added some bone meal to the soil and it gets water based fertilizer regularly. We’ve had plenty of rain. It gets part sun, part shade. I live in Central Florida. How can I encourage it to grow and, even, perhaps, flower?
Best answer:
Answer by fair2midlynn
The success or failure of a planting often depends on whether the plants receive adequate moisture. Liberal watering during the growing season will encourage plants to grow more profusely and ensure a large crop of flowers during the blooming season.
To aid in proper watering, construct a saucer-like basin around the plant from the extra backfill soil. This will hold water until it drains down to the plant’s roots. Both a soggy soil with poor drainage and insufficient watering will cause leaves to yellow and eventually die. During the winter months, plants should be watered only when the soil next to the plants is fairly dry.
Mulch placed around the base of the plants will help conserve moisture, stabilize root temperature, and reduce weed infestations. Keep a 2- to 3-inch circular area around the stem of plants free of mulch. Mulches against the stems of plants may increase the chance of stem rot.
Common organic mulch materials include leaves, pine needles, bark, wood chips, sawdust and bagasse (a sugar cane by-product). Inorganic materials like glass wool, gravel and crushed stone also are suitable. Peat should not be used because once dry it is very difficult to wet and may restrict water movement into the soil.
Fertilization For best growth and flowering, bird-of-paradise requires fertilization. Slow-release fertilizers, such as sewage sludge and bloodmeal, or an inorganic complete fertilizer such as 12-4-8, can be used. Apply slow-release fertilizers at a rate of three to five pounds per 100 square feet of bed area and 12-4-8 at the rate of one pound per 100 square feet of bed area. Spread fertilizer around plants every three months during the growing season. Addition of minor elements is recommended.
At least once a year, preferably during summer, remove dead leaves and old flower stalks to prevent fungal organisms from building up on dead tissue.
